Best Beginner Class Guide

Your first class in Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 is not a cosmetic pick. Xenomorphs flank harder than in the 2021 game, four-player swarms assume teammates are nearby, and Patch 1 did not soften early difficulty. This page ranks the five launch kits for new marines, then points you at Getting Started, How to Play, and the full Classes hub.

Quick ranking for day-one players

RankClassWhy
SMachinistTurrets cover blind spots while you learn maps and spawns.
ADuelistFamiliar shooter loop; two primaries; mobility forgives panic rolls.
BMarauderHuge guns, but ammo and friendly fire punish beginners.
CHunterWeak-point precision and trap placement need map knowledge.
CMedicGreat in organised squads; hard when you are still learning yourself.

Specialist is endgame only — see How to Unlock Specialist. Do not plan your first hour around it.

Why Machinist is the safest first pick

Machinist turns hallways into kill boxes. Deploy a sentry so one approach is covered while you watch another. That alone cuts the chaos that deletes new players: Runners on ceilings, rear flanks, and panic reloads with nothing watching the door.

Close-range kits (shotguns and compact automatics) forgive imperfect aim. Plasma options such as the SMB-94 Zephyr only burn reserve ammo when overheated if you fire in patient bursts — useful while you learn when to conserve. Passive bonuses that reward staying near your gear also teach the habit the game wants: stay with the fireteam, do not chase kills into vents.

Solo with synthetic companions? Machinist is still the best answer. Bots are poor at area denial; your turret and Bodyguard drone fill that gap. Full kit detail: Machinist class guide.

Duelist if you already shoot for a living

Coming from Gears-style third-person shooters, Destiny, or Helldivers? Duelist feels natural in minutes. Shoot, grenade stacked packs, fire offensive buffs when elites push. Two primary slots mean you can carry a mid-range rifle and a close-quarters answer without visiting the armory mid-mission.

After Patch 1, Explosive Rounds and Residual Explosives are no longer trap picks — the extra damage penalty is gone or cut — but you still trade weak-point purity for area damage. New players can ignore explosive boards until Standard feels easy. Mobility perks make stun recovery less punishing when a Runner tags you. Class page: Duelist.

Marauder later, not Mission One

Rockets, flamethrowers, and smartgun fantasy are why many people buy the game. Hold that thought until you know where ammo crates spawn. Heavy weapons empty fast; beginners arrive at defence sections dry. On Intense and above, friendly fire turns a bad rocket into a squad wipe. Learn crate routes and callouts first, then main Marauder.

Hunter and Medic ask for homework

Hunter wants consistent weak-point hits and electric trap placement on real spawn lines. Missing shots on a Praetorian while the swarm closes is how pubs lose marines. Medic manages limited heals and stations while tracking four health bars — valuable on Extreme, exhausting when you still cannot name a Warden. Unlock them after you finish Campaign Walkthrough once on Casual or Standard.

Habits that matter more than the class

  1. Stay on Casual or Standard until rooms feel boring.
  2. Use the sidearm on lone Runners; save primary magazines for swarm events.
  3. Keep visual contact with the squad — density assumes four marines close together.
  4. Melee is space, not DPS: shove, reload, roll.
  5. Reload between doors, not mid-wave.
  6. If PC hitching ruins learning, fix pacing in PC settings before you refund.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2.

Is Machinist still best after Patch 1?

Yes for beginners. Patch 1 fixed turret and Bodyguard bugs (gas/cryo ammo, floor placement, several perk applications). The learning advantages — coverage and forgiving CQW — did not change.

Should solo players pick Medic?

Usually no. Synthetic companions need area denial more than another heal button. Machinist covers that. Bring Medic when three humans can listen to callouts.

Can I respec if I hate my first class?

You keep every kit. Level another class; progress toward Specialist is shared across the five cores. Nothing is wasted.

When should I unlock Specialist?

After the five base classes reach Rank 10 and you understand their abilities. Rushing Specialist without fragments leaves an empty hybrid.

Does the dropdown hide this page?

Yes — the Guides menu caps at eight rows. This page stays on the [Guides hub](/guides/) with the other how-tos.
